Barcelona in Gray Hues: Spain ’11

The shadowy tones of the film; the mysterious blacks hiding under the disguise of alluring whites; the ever-enticing rustic charm- it’s no wonder that black and white film has come back into fashion nowadays. No wonder, that film photography has made its comeback- even with the technological advance that has been so proudly heralded in the 21st Century. Funny how the ridiculously backward B&Ws and hazy, light-leak plagued films have wiggled its way into the hearts of so-called hipster teenagers all around. Adults, too.

Call it following a trend of some sort, or declaring oneself to be unique and going against the flow. But going against the flow is the popular thing to do nowadays, and so in that way hipsters are now mainstream.

Huh.

Before I met the darling iPhone 5, I would have proudly protected my film camera against all dissenters- indeed my Pentax does snap much better pictures (with stunningly clear photos) than our 3D camera or Olympus (4 years old and ancient) could ever aspire to. Ironic because the camera’s older than I am. Double my age, actually. But with the iPhone 5, sharp images are just at the tip of your fingers- and no, you don’t have to waste time developing film or waste money buying new DSLRs like the Canon EOS series or whatnot.

Although it wouldn’t be wise to listen to a word I say about cameras, I’m no photographer. I just take pictures. (Contradictory statements, no? But I speak on the premise that not all people who take pictures are photographers: what is the definition, then, of a photographer? Ah, philosophy.)

Anyways. Back to the impracticalities of film. Yes, I admit. It is impractical. Foolish, a waste of money- reflective of a person with a little too much money to waste (although I could hardly spare the money, perhaps more reflective of a person wasting his/her parents money, hah.) Still, there’s some kind of odd nostalgia involved with analogue photography- and it does give some common topic for me to talk about with my grandfather.

So. My first (and presumably last) roll of B&W film.

In front of the whimsical and ridiculously grand and out-of-proportions Sagrada Familia. Gaudi is amazing.

I spy.
I spy.
I love watching water fountains spray flowing crystals of liquid up into the air, then goggle at the sparkles as they disintegrate in that split second before they fall- such simple pleasures.

Little orbs of light in the dark.
Little orbs of light in the dark.
